What are the 3 types of numbers in Python?

You need not to be a maths whiz in order to ace in programming! The truth lies in the fact that only a few programmers should know more about basic algebra. Well, how much mathematics you should know basically depends on the application or the program you are working on.

Although computer science and mathematics are not directly correlated, numbers do form an important part of the programming languages. And, python is no exception!

In python, you often come across several interesting topics like online python compiler, python string and other such topics.

One of the essential topics in this popular programming language that we are going to discuss in this blog is python numbers.

From palindrome numbers in python, to floating point numbers to integer numbers, you will come across essential python numbers.

Let’s discuss them in detail!

Python Numbers

When we are talking about numbers in python, we will talk about its three main types that are integer numbers, complex numbers and floating point numbers.

Integer and Floating Point Numbers

These two are regarded as the main numbers when it comes to the study of python numbers. Let’s discuss them in detail.

Integer Numbers

In python language, integer numbers are touted as zero, positive or negative numbers which will not be having any kind of frictional part. Though, integer is basically defined as a whole number which has no decimal places.

As 1 is an integer but 0 is not an integer. Additionally, the name of integer data type would be int, with the type ():

You can also create an integer with the help of your desired number. For example; you can assign the integer value 25 to its variable sum:

>>> num = 25

Whenever you are creating this kind of integer, 25 is the value which will also be known as the integer literal as the integer can be typed in the form of a code.

Moreover, you need to know about converting a string integer to a number by using int () which will be useful to work with the user input. When you are writing large numbers with your hand, group digits would either be separated with the help of a comma or a decimal point.

The number 1,000,000 is easy to read as compared to the 100000. Moreover, in python, you may not use commas for grouping integer literals. Though, you can do it with an underscore (_)

Also, note that an integer should be present without its fractional part. If a fractional part is included then it may become a floating number. But there is no limit of how large an integer can be.

Floating Point Numbers

In python, a floating point number or the float numbers are defined as numbers with special decimal places. 1 and 0 is considered as the decimal place number so is the -2.75.

Moreover, the name of a floating data type is considered as float. In python you can write it as:

>>> type [ 1. 0]

< class ‘ float’>

Just like the integer, floats can also be created with the help of floating point literals. Though, you can easily convert them with the help of float ()

To represent the required floating point literals, you can adopt three ways. Below ways help create floating point literals with the given value of one million.

>>> 1000000. 0

>>> 1 _ 000 _ 000.0

>>> 1e6

The first and the second way are similar to the technique of creating integer literals. Though, the third technique will use E notation for creating the float literal. It is an exponential notation that helps represent numbers that are quite big to fit on the screen.

When you are writing a float literal with the help of E notation, type the letter e with another number. Python will take that number to e’s left by multiplying it with 10 to raise the power after e. Python can also use E notations for displaying the large numbers.

Though, floats do have the maximum size which basically depends on the system. When you reach the maximum number, python will return the special value inf.

Inf defines infinity and it signifies that the number you are enabling to reach the maximum float value that will be allowed in the number. Whereas the – inf defines negative infinity as it represents the number that is negative and that goes beyond your minimum float number.

Complex Numbers

Complex numbers are defined as the numbers having real or imaginary components.

Take an example; 5 +6j is considered as the complex number. Here, 5  is a real component while 6 gets multiplied by the j and becomes the imaginary component.

You need to use j or j as an imaginary component as other characters may pause a syntax error.

Palindrome Number in Python

You may also need to check if any given number in python is palindrome or not. A palindrome is any number that stays unaltered. 123321 is the number which is palindrome as when you read it backward or forward it stays the same.

To check a palindrome number in python, take the input of that number or create its copy. Then create any new variable in order to reverse that number and initialise it with the 0. Using mod 10, traverse that number and divide it by the particular operation 10. But make sure, you are adding all the digits in a reversal order in order to check that number.

Moreover, in the case you need to check if a string is palindrome or not, just take the input and calculate the length of that string. Then create the decremental loop with the last index and go till the reversal order.
