History of Brownies

Brownies have been around for over a century, and they are one of the most beloved and popular desserts in the world. But what is the history of brownies? Let’s take a look.

The first known recipe for brownies was published in the 1897 edition of Fannie Farmer’s Boston Cooking School cookbook. The recipe called for baking chocolate, butter, sugar, eggs and flour together to create cake-like squares that were dusted with powdered sugar or served with cream or melted chocolate on top.

Though it’s unclear who created this original recipe, it is believed that Bertha Palmer, a Chicago socialite and wife of a hotel magnate who owned Palmer House Hotel in Chicago may have played a role. Around this time she asked her pastry chef to make something small enough to fit into boxed lunches given to ladies attending the 1893 World’s Fair Columbian Exposition in Chicago—and thus creating what we now know as brownies!

In 1905 another version was published by Lowney’s Cook Book under their Chocolate Fudge Brownie Cake recipe which included cocoa powder as an ingredient—creating a more fudgy version than the original cake-like squares from 1897.

Types of Brownies

When it comes to desserts, there is nothing quite like a warm, gooey, chocolate brownie. Brownies have been a favorite treat for decades and come in many different shapes and sizes. Whether you prefer the classic chewy variety or something more decadent with layers of chocolate chips and frosting, there is a brownie out there for everyone’s taste buds. Here are some of the most popular types of brownies:

  1. Classic Chewy Brownies: These are your traditional brownies that feature cocoa powder in the batter and often come with an optional layer of chocolate chips on top. They are typically cut into squares or rectangles after baking and have a soft yet chewy texture that makes them so beloved by all ages.
  2. Fudge Brownies: If you’re looking for something extra rich and indulgent, fudge brownies are sure to hit the spot! Made with melted dark chocolate instead of cocoa powder, these treats will melt in your mouth with their ultra-rich flavor profile and dense texture.

Ingredients for Making Brownies

Whether you’re a beginner baker or an experienced one, brownies are a classic dessert that everyone enjoys. They make the perfect treat for birthdays, holidays, and any other special occasion. If you’re looking to whip up some homemade brownies from scratch, here is a list of ingredients that you will need:

  • Flour – All-purpose flour is the most common type used for baking brownies. Make sure to sift it before adding it to your mixture for an extra light and fluffy texture.
  • Butter – Butter adds moisture and flavor to your brownies. You can use either salted or unsalted butter in the recipe; just make sure that it is melted before adding it in with the rest of the ingredients.
  • Sugar – Brown sugar gives your baked goods a deep caramel flavor while also making them moist and chewy on the inside. For an even richer taste, add in dark cocoa powder with your sugar as well!
  • Eggs – Eggs help bind all of your ingredients together while also providing structure to your brownie batter. Be sure to use room temperature eggs so they mix into the batter easily!
